IATA and Montreal Convention
IATA and the Montreal Convention are the foundation of our work and the main principles to which we refer when solving luggage issues for our customers.
IATA
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the amalgamation of 268 airlines representing 171 countries and covering 83% of the air traffic. It is committed in setting the standards for the air transport industry and improving the functioning of airlines.
IATA was founded in 1945 in Cuba with 57 airlines on board. Now its headquarters are located in Montreal, Canada. It is a very influential organization with distinct goals and priorities.
- Safety & Security
IATA strives to introduce the best technical standards to ensure maximum flight safety. It focuses on implementation of real-time aircraft tracking methods and the improvement of passenger safety checks.
- Simplifying the business
The project was launched 2004 and is responsible for the implementation of electronic tickets and boarding pass barcodes. It works on mobile boarding passes, self-printed baggage tags and other functions to implement them for as many airlines as possible.
- Environment
IATA has set itself the target of reducing CO2 emissions by 50% by 2050.
These are the main priorities, but not the only ones. Over the years, IATA has had a major impact on the aviation industry and is now attacking more and more employees.
Montreal Convention of 1999
The Montreal Convention is a treaty signed in 1999 which amends the provision of the Warsaw Convention on the liability of the airline for passengers and their possessions. This is the main reason for our work, because this convention obliges airlines:
- To compensate the damage or loss of the baggage if the amonut of 1370 USD per passenger is not exeeded.
If the luggage is checked in and the amount of the damage exceeds 1370 USD, the airlines may cancel the liability if they can prove that the damage was caused by the poor quality or deficiency of the luggage itself.
It also extends the airline’s liability regarding the death or a physical injury of passengers (≈ $138 000 USD/ per passenger) and the delayed baggage (≈ $5700 USD/per passenger).
IATA and the Montreal Convention secure flights and make them more passenger-oriented. They extend air travelers rights and make sure they fly safely whatever destination they have. Just like us, but only from the baggage point of view.
