How to Set a Combination Lock

Regular Combination Locks

If you have just bought a new suitcase or briefcase with a lock, it’s better to set your own key combination at once. The default set of numbers that open the baggage is usually 000. It must be specified in the warranty certificate or a label attached to the luggage.

In order to change the default combination, you need to:

1. Open the suitcase with a default code;
2. Press the button that unlocks the baggage or push it forward;
3. Turn the dials until you set your own combination while still pressing the button;
4. When you release the button, your code should be already reset;
5. Try several times to lock and unlock your baggage to make sure everything’s ok.

TSA Combination Locks

TSA combination locks differ from the regular ones with one small detail – they have key holes and they are Travel Sentry® Approved. Only security airport workers who are legally authorized to inspect the contents of your luggage have the master key that can unlock a suitcase or bag without a necessary combination. These locks prevent the damage of the suitcase because when security agents can’t unlock the baggage, they cut the lock off.

There are 2 types of TSA locks: inbuilt into baggage and detached used to lock different types of luggage.

In order to set an inbuilt TSA combination lock, you should:

1. Open your baggage with a standard 000 code;
2. Find a small button on the side of the lock (not the unlocking one) and press it with some sharp object (e.g. pen);
3. You will hear a click which means that you can change the combination;
4. After you set the code, push the button the unlocks the baggage;
5. If you hear a click, the combination is reset;
6. Unlock and lock the baggage a few times to check if it works.

If you wish to set a new combination on a detached TSA lock, you need to:

1. Open it with a default combination – 000;
2. Pull up the shackle and turn it 180 degrees counter clockwise;
3. Push the shackle down and hold it;
4. Turn the dials until you set the necessary code;
5. Pull the shackle out and turn it to its original position;
6. Try locking and unlocking it to find out whether it functions properly.
